Trying to collect on a closed Citibank account with 0 balance ripoff

These people are unbelieveable! I got a call from my father who said he received a call from a Josh Gates, who identified himself as someone in the legal profession and I was in serious trouble. It runs out he also called my mother, brother and my sister-in-laws mother (how they connected me with her is beyond me) with the same story. This is before they even tried to contact me!

When I called, they said I owed $2621.00 on an old Citicard that I believed to be closed and paid off. They wanted me to wire them the money or give them my checking account number before I even investigated the matter, saying I "could always take it up with Citibank later"! I was flabbergasted as this is the first contact they had made with me, nothing via mail. I just mailed out a cease and desist letter. Any other tips for dealing with these idiots. Their illegal practices are beyond anything I have ever dealt with.
