Deliberate misrepresentation to ripoff

My 86 year old mother received a letter from CAMCO regarding a debt in my sister's name. My widowed sister in considerable debt and my mother has been trying to help her out financially.

My mother contacted Ken Laverly, the CAMCO representative identified in the letter, to request additional information regarding the debt. The only information he was able to provide was that the debt was incurred approximately 10 years ago at Montgomery Wards in Florida. He alleged that if the debt was not paid immediately that he would personally guarantee that both my mother and sister would be put in jail.

I advised my mother that she should cease all contact with CAMCO and that they were attempting to collect a debt that had already been written off.

The harassing telephone calls stopped after a few weeks and my mother assumed that CAMCO understood that the threatening tactics were not working.

After a few weeks of no contact Ken Laverly contacted my mother again and asked to speak with my sister. My mother did not remember his name and was somewhat confused by the telephone call. She stated that my sister was not there and asked what he wanted.

Ken Laverly informed her that he was a friend of my sister's and that he wanted to speak to her regarding a very personal matter. He went on to say that he was a very good friend of my sister's and knew her from when he lived in Florida. Then he said that he had loaned my sister $1,000 that she had neglected to repay.

When my mother asked for his telephone number. He refused to provide a telephone number because he said that he moved around a lot. He told her that she should mail him a personal check to the following address: Ken Laverly, PO Box 5187 Rockford, Ill. 61125.
