Citibank (Citigroup)
1980s Bankruptcy Account Shown Open and Two Unknown Accounts

Education & Science

Many, many years ago, my family and I filed for bankruptcy because we had 3 kids to raise and had trouble paying our bills. Unfortunately, the bankruptcy included Citibank. (This was way back in the 80's!)

We thought we had everything covered and would be able to start rebuilding our lives shortly after that. Fast-forward to 2006: my family and I decided that we wanted to try to purchase our first home. As many of you probably already know, before you can buy a home you have to get pre-qualified. Right? Right.

So we had our agent run a credit check, as is one of the usual steps to getting pre-qualified. Guess what showed up as an "open account" on our credit check? Yup, if you guessed "Citibank," then give yourself three cheers, a pat on the back, and a year's supply of donuts and ice cream!

In addition, we found out through this credit check that 2 accounts were *UNKNOWINGLY* opened and closed in 2003 and 2005. We immediately called Citibank (initially one of the main offices in NY) and tried to find out why these two accounts were showing up on the credit report. We were transferred to the Fraud/Investigations Department, where we were told that an investigation would be started. We received a "control number" that was supposed to allow us to call in and check the status of the investigation if we heard nothing back within 5-7 business days.

We also sent the Citibank Service Center (in San Antonio, TX) a copy of the bankruptcy papers and asked in the same letter why these two accounts were showing up on the credit report. So far, we have heard *NOTHING* back from them. (Not a big enough surprise to make you fall off your chair, eh, folks?)

We tried calling back at the number they gave us, but it has since been disconnected. Every time we try a different number, we get the usual, boringly expected run-around, with a transfer from one department to the next.

It's ridiculous. What an absolute joke and utterly poor excuse for a professional company, business, and bank Citibank is! I don't even know why or how Citibank is still in business to this very day, other than by ripping people off and mistreating them. (I feel even more sorry for the people who actually choose to work there!)
