$3241 Collection on Credit Report With No Account Ever Opened

I'm in the process of purchasing a new home. When the lender ran my credit, I found out there is a collection on my report from CitiBank in the amount of $3241.00. I have never applied for a credit card from CitiBank. I called CitiBank, and they have no record of my SSN in their system. I'm disputing this, of course, but I am seriously angered by this erroneous information being reported on my credit. How can CitiBank Credit Bureau even put something on my credit report? I've never had an account with CitiBank!
