UHaul
Ripoff OverCharged Credit Card for Late Fees when Truck Was NOT Returned Late, but EARLY

Cars & Transport

My husband is in the military and we got orders to move from Greensboro, NC to Goose Creek, SC. We called both Budget and Uhaul to get price quotes. Budget was cheaper, but UHaul matched the price per our request and did not charge a deposit like Budget was asking. We thought "hey, great, saves us a little bit of money". We were never so wrong before in our life.

First of all, the company did not allow us enough mileage to get from point A to point B and when we inquired about that, they said there is nothing that they choose to do about that. That was upsetting, but at that point it was too late, if we backed out, we'd be charged cancellation fees - though we should have.

Secondly, UHaul had us dropping off the rental truck at a location 30 miles from our destination, when there was a location 2 miles down the road. When my husband called up and inquired about that, after much complaining, they agreed to change the drop off location, and not charge us the $40 fee. Gee, how nice. NOT! They should have done that to begin with. We foolishly took it for granted they would have us dropping it off at the closest location to begin with, since they knew the address we were moving to. Apparently the customer service department doesn't care.

My husband called the night BEFORE our UHaul was back (you get the rental for 3 days) inquiring about the change of drop off location. We informed Joe (the customer "service" guy) we would be dropping it off that night, since my husband had to be at work early the next morning, and there is no way I could drive 2 vehicles there. Joe told us there is a night drop off box, to drop off the key and a copy of the contract there, and they will get it in the morning.

We dropped the UHaul off on Tuesday, August 10, at 9:30 P.M. We didn't hear anything from UHaul so we assumed, foolishly, that everything was fine. Wrong again.

On August 16, a charge shows up on my online bank statement for $52.39 from UHaul. The charge had been done on August 13, but just then showing up. Baffled, my husband calls UHaul, just to get a run around, them stating that they would contact the local UHaul and get back to us. No response.

My husband calls again on August 17, and gets the same run around. Same for August 18. At this point, we are rather upset, and I already contacted my bank, telling them I DID NOT authorize that charge, and I need to dispute it. At this time, I am waiting for that affadavit to show up in my mailbox to fill out and have them start investigating.

Finally, today, August 19, my husband recieves a phone call from the Field Manager, Eric Brant. He stated "let me check into it, and I will call you back". He called back again and stated "The owner was there both of those days you were late and would have seen the truck. Therefore, the truck wasn't there." My response to that is, the owner is blind! We were not 2 days late, and this is unsatisfactory.

We informed UHaul that we informed our bank, and will be contacting lawyers. Tomorrow my husband is going to contact a lawyer and we are going to fry their butts! I also intend to find any site I can online to tell this story to, the news papers, news channels, and file a claim for the courts. Apparently we are not the only ones UHaul has done this too, and it's going to stop.
