Trying to make me pay a debt that is 15 years old

I received a call from ARA Inc. Stated that I owe a debt on a vehicle back in 1996 that I can't recall that I owed and now they are talking about garnishing my wages if I don't pay the debt. They talking about they could take me to court for about $40,000 because of the taxes and additonal payments that was left on the vehicle that was repossesed they are willing to give me a discount on $28,000 which would have me to pay $2,800.

I explain to them that this is not on my credit report and they are trying to argue me down that it is. The statue of limitations has pasted because it's been 15 years. I contacted the court system and they don't have any record of me at all on it and I even double check my credit report and it's not there. How in the world can they threathen you about garnishing your wages. They also stated they have been trying to contact me which is a lie because if that's the case I would have resolved this along time ago. I had to put a stop payment on my account so that can't try to get any money out of my account.

The lady that called even had a story about the same thing happening to her that she is now paying off I was like that is crazy and I explain to her that I didn't believe her they would tell you anything to try and scare you. What am I to do with this people should I contact my job also to have them on point about this scam. Any suggestions?
