I left my Volkswagen at Star Auto Service located at 18015 Culver Drive, Irvine, CA 92612 to check the air conditioner which wasn't working. There I spoke with both Joe Mayar and Joey Asefi.

They said the air conditioner problem would be fixed by changing the Freon. After a couple of hours they told me they actually had to open the dashboard and said that my car had an electric failure that would be fixed by replacing the climate unit (photo 1). Joe Mayar called me few days later to say that the problem was actually worse than initially thought. He said that he had to take the car to another shop (decision he took without my consent) where a specialist (Executive Auto Electric) was able to fix it.

A few weeks ago I pressed the defroster button (for the first time since my car was serviced at Star Auto Service). As soon as I pressed the button, heavy smoke came out of the dashboard and I nearly lost control of my car. I pulled over and turned off the engine. I stepped out of the car because it smelled like burned rubber and plastic. I waited for the smoke to dissipate. After that I never touched any of the electrical accessories for fear of causing a fire.

I took my car to Common Wealth Volkswagen Audi on February 7th. Where the technician (Dave Mason) found that melted interior wiring harness and right seat heater switch and rear window defroster switch plugged incorrectly, the rear defroster switch connector was plugged into the right seat heater switch and the right seat heater switch was plugged into the rear window defroster causing short to ground and melt down of the wiring harness. The estimate to repair this damage is $4,622.21 tax.

I contacted Star Auto Service on that same day, since they had been the only ones that had worked on the electrical system of my car. Joe Mayar said he had no time to meet with me but he asked me to fax him the VW estimate.

The next day, Joe (of Star Auto Service), told me that in order for him to determine whether he was liable for my car's damage, I needed to take my car to
EXECUTIVE AUTO ELECTRIC which was the shop where he ad taken my car (without my permission).

Majid Khorramian, at Executive Auto Electric, opened up the front fuse box (picture 1) and showed me where he had cut a wire, bypassed the fuse socket and patched to a different connection. When I asked why he had bypassed the fuse instead of replacing it he explained to me and a friend of mine that that is the correct way to fix it, and that he has been doing that for 40 years. He also mentioned that the certified technicians at the dealership do not know how to make repairs and the only thing they do is replace parts.

After this I went to Star Auto Service where Joe Mayar suggested that we all met at the VW dealership to get a direct explanation from the technicians. I agreed and on February 15th, I took more time off work and met with John Carll and Dave Mason of Common Wealth Volkswagen. Joe Mayar did not show up and in his place Joey Asefi of Star Auto Service came. The VW technicians explained that:

The front fuse box should have been replaced.

A new fuse should have been installed

The wire should have never been cut and patched over to the wrong connector

The air conditioning fans should have been replaced because they were drawing too much current and caused the fuse to burn and melt.

John Carll said that by not doing any of the above, the manufacturer's electrical design had been seriously compromised. He also reiterated that further damage had been caused by the incorrect connection of the defroster and seat heater under the dashboard. He said that this caused the wire harness to burn and melt.

He also explained that his initial estimate did not include the replacement of the front fuse box. The total estimated cost now stands at: $5,729 tax
