Voicemail Callback Asked for Social Security Number and Possible Identity Theft

I received a voicemail from "GMAC" which was garbled and hard to understand, but had a clear-as-day call-back number.

I called them back, and they said that they usually call when a payment is late. I do not have financing through GMAC. They asked me for my social security number or account number. Since I did not have an account number, and wasn't thinking at the time, I gave it to them. I was trying to figure out why they had called.

I am now trying to get a fraud alert on my credit reports.

I will add more if anything further happens (let's hope it doesn't).

I asked to speak to a supervisor and there was no hold music, it's like they set the phone down (in the wind I might add), took a cigarette break, and changed their voice. I don't even know if these guys are a real company, but I was shocked to find them on this site already.
