ATM eats my paycheck!

I went to a freestanding B of A ATM machine to deposit my pay check, over $6000! There was a notice that no envelope is to be used for deposit. I put the check in the slot. The check disappeared and a screen came up with an image of the check and a message that the machine could not read the amount of the check and to manually enter the amount. The image of the check was way too small for me to read the amount on the screen so I punched the key to have the check returned. Well, guess what? The machine did a few little light flashes and I could see that it was trying to push the check back out through the slot, alas, after a minute or so, the screen went blank and my atm card was returned. No check, no deposit, no nothing!!! I could not believe it. When I called the 800 number, I could not believe their nonchalant attitude. They asked me all sorts of my personal information (I was standing in a public place next to a line of people trying to use the ATM machines). Then they said it would take 10 business days to resolve the 'issue'. They said they 'didn't know' how often the ATM's would be emptied! They also said that 10 days is fast, and that it usually takes 45 days to resolve these things. Then they said they would give me credit IF the check is located. Can you believe that kind of glibness? I've been a B of A customer for 40 years and this just about takes the cake. Why are they replacing the old ATM machinery if the new machines are not doing the job they are supposed to. They can't read the checks well and the customer gets stuck with bad results. Then they treat the customer in a non chalant, pretty indifferent manner. They seem to forget that their customers are real people who have bills to pay NOW and not in 10 business days. What if my rent is due tomorrow, what I need cash from my pay check to pay bills that are due NOW? I think Bof A has the responsibility to get over to that ATM machine within 12 hours to find my paycheck and either post it to my account or return it to me.
