Charges late payment fee on payment due on bank holiday

I have a credit card account with Bank of America. The most recent statement was due on 10/8/07 (Columbus Day). When I received the statement, that date didn't even register as a holiday to me. I don't get it off, so I hardly notice it. I made a payment at a Bank of America branch on 10/6/07 (a Saturday).

A few days later I check my account and notice there's a late payment fee of $39 assessed to my account. I sent a customer service note from the website telling them what had happened and requesting a credit. I received a canned response saying that I needed to call in about this matter.

I called in today (10/15/07) and spoke to Nicole. I explained the situation that I paid on the 6th, but the bank, being closed on Monday, did not credit my payment until the 9th. She told me that that was normal branch procedures. If you pay after 3 PM, it will not be credited until the next working bank day. She said this so matter-of-factly, even though that does not appear anywhere on the statement. I asked her if they would be able to reverse the charge on my account and she told me flatly that they could not post credits to a closed account. I pointed out to her that they could post charges to my account, on a bank holiday no less, but they could not perform the simple courtesy of refunding a charge.

I plan on going into the branch where I made the payment to see if anything can be done about the charge. The $39 fee isn't the worst of my worries, though. I'm afraid that they will throw me into default APR over 1 late payment. I am totally disgusted with Bank of America. Does anyone have any suggestions for when I meet face to face with a banker?
