Rip off How can they get away with this

I recieve a statement from my Bank of America Credit Card, on an account that I had closed but am still paying off the balance. Plastered all over the statement are suggestions that I pay my bill online. Two days before my due date I decided to do just that and pay my bill online only to find out that I am unable to use the online service because the account is closed. Ok, I will just pay you over the phone, I told the CRS over the phone, because I don't think my payment will make it in time if I pay by mail. She tells me that will cost me 15.00 dollars. I said are you telling me; I have to pay you 15.00 dollars in order to make a payment to you. She than say's I could go into a branch office and make the payment but because my due date falls on a Sunday and today is a Friday, it won't make the cut off time and therefore I will face a 40.00 dollar late charge. I try to explain that I was only following the leading suggestions that the bank printed on my statement. She explained that those are stock phrases printed on all statements!

Fine, but should I be penalized to the tune of 15.00-40.00's? In the end I told her Bank of America has once again found a clever way to screw there customers and I would pay the 15.00 dollars and submit a check over the phone. I was then informed that because my checking account was not a Bank of America checking account another 15.00 would be tacked on to the payment.

So now I had the choice of paying 30.00 or 40.00 dollars to the bank. I said can you really get away with this? This is a bunch of crap and must be illegal. What do you think?
