AMEX billing for COSTCO charges

My issue with AMEX credit card is the sneaky billing system-or the sneaky way AMEX presents its data. It seems that they rely entirely on billing cycles and do not show a register of charges and payments in real time sequence. Like so many reviewers, I pay my bill (Costco) in full each month PROVIDED I can figure out what exactly is my balance due. I cannot get a clear match between charges and credits for payments. I have opened a complaint regarding a payment I made by check in July which does not show up anywhere, as AMEX drags a false unpaid bill total into Septembe. The system is clearly designed to encourage customer over payments or other errors.
