Too much personal info. - Internet Service

Tried to get Time Warner internet service, I gave them my name, address, and Phone number. They asked for a credit card number and I told them that I wanted to be billed monthly. But i was told that I had to pay the first month in advance. So I went ahead and gave them All my credit card information. They asked for my birth date which I hesitated to give but I went ahead and gave it to them. Then they asked me for my SSN which I refused, They told me to give them my drivers license number in place of my SSN, i told them that I felt like they already had too much information on me. I told them that the main thing was my credit card information and they already had that. Well, they refused to process my order because I refused to give them my SSN or drivers license number. Why does time Warner need so much personal information just to get their internet service?
