Alliance Reservations Network
Ripoff — a charge without prior notification

Traveling & Tourism

Wanting to make a reservation at a hotel in Canada where we've stayed before, I opted to make the reservation on-line rather than by telephone, even though they have a toll-free number. Through a Google search, I found what I thought was the hotel website and went through the process of making a reservation (actually two, for two weekends in a row). There was no notification that there was any company other than the hotel involved, and there was certainly no mention of a fee of any sort for the reservation.

Checking my monthly statement from my credit card company, I was more than a little surprised to find a charge of $10 for each reservation. I have contacted both the hotel (cancelling the internet reservation and making one of my own) and Amex and tried to contact Alliance, but they are not open today (as their phone message states), so I both left a message on the telephone tape and sent them an e-mail.
