Account goes straight from good standing to collection right after I cancelled service

I had Comcast cable and Internet service for about a year and a half. On January 19 I decided to cancel service because the price was too high. On February 6 I received a final bill for $11.80, which I paid by check. Before that, they always took the payments automatically from my credit card. When I cancelled Comcast they said I had to return the equipment and that there were locations where I could drop it off but could not give me the address of any locations. Comcast did not send me any other bills or instructions to return the equipment after the February bill. They did however call me on March 14 to say they could pick up the equipment at my home. I made an appointment for the next day and the equipmet was picked up on March 15.

In April I applied for credit at my bank and it was declined because of recent negative information on my credit report. When I checked I see a collection for $750 as of March with Comcast listed as the original debtor. How did my account go from good standing to collection in one month? Even if I had not returned the equipment, shouldn't have Comcast sent me a bill before sending my account to collection? To make matters worse, I filed a dispute online at the credit reporting agency and with in 2 days I got notice that the information was verified to be correct and that the negative information would stay on my credit report until 2018!!!

I can only assume Comcast is doing this as retaliation for cancelling the service with them. They tried to convince me to stay but I decided to go to another provider. I will never again do any business with Comcast and I'm telling everyone I know to NEVER contract services with Comcast.
