I signed a contract with Monitronics in March for 24 months. I moved out of house year later into apartment in March and tried to cancel contract. I called cutomer service and WAS TOLD that even I am not living in my old house anymore, I have to pay contract, which was another year. And in order to cancel it (contract), I need to call in March and cancel. Fine!

I paid for another year and called on March 5 (contract expires on 3/31) to cancel. Not so. I was told that I need to submit a written request. I did immediately and Monitronics got my letter on 3/7, but they won't cancel my contract because it wasn't recieved 30 days before expiration date.

I tried to explain that I paid 1 full year for service I didn't use and last year customer service person told me just to call before contract expires, which I did, but Monitronics won't cancel it and keep sending bills.

As soon as I talked to Monitronics on March 5 and sent a cancelation request, I read contract again. Under "Term" section it doesn't say anything about 30-days written request. It's on the back of contract, under "Notes" section, in very fine print. So when you read "Term" section, you think everything is dandy, but then Monitronics comes to extort money from you because you are not aware of fine print on the back of contract.

I think people who suffered from Monitronics practices need to contact each other, find other victims and file class action lawsuit. And be sure to tell your friends about Monitronics and ask them to tell their friends and their friends. Only together we can fight back.
