Said 1 year contract and then made it for 2 years... Very Deceptive!

I signed up for Vontage in March and thought I would give it a try... I was told there was a one year contract because of the equipment but thought that was ok, even though the equipment was used. I moved 6 months ago and decided not to even hook up the equipment because the service was pretty crappy, there was always static and I couldn't use my computer and phone at the same time or there was a terrible noise. I called when I moved to see if maybe there was a pro-rated charge if I wanted to cancel early. I was told no it was a $89 charge if I canceled within the year time. I was told that if I waited till March I would not have a cancel fee. I called this morning to cancel being as it has been one year, I was told that now that it has been a year the cancel charge is $39 and that I would have to go one more year to cancel and not have a fee. I told them I never signed up for that and they said they have a recording of my sign up, so I said I would love to hear it because I would have never signed up for 2 years! They said I had to go through an investigation for that, so I have now started that. I also asked to speak to a supervisor and the lady told me she was the top of the line. I asked her, if I was to make a complaint about her who would I talk to and she said "her" Ya right, take a complaint on yourself... What a joke. I explained to her that I thought it was terrible for a company in these economic times to be ripping people off or tricking them into spending money on cancellation fees. Anyway after repeating myself over and over I finally got to speak to someone else who still did absolutely nothing but say sorry over and over but there is nothing that can be done except do an investigation and give me a month free. After all this I still have to call back and keep on the investigation. It sounds to me that they want to make it hard enough that people will give up and they will just pay the fee's. I think this is poor business and I plan on complaining to the BBB and any and everyone else I can... If it stops just one person from signing up with Vontage it will be worth it to me.
