Defective Carpet Pad, Only a $500 Gift Certificate Offered

My husband and I bought carpet and pad (top of the line) from Home Depot in Parker, Colorado, in August to carpet our entire house. Almost immediately there were many problems with the pad. We notified Home Depot, and they said it was not their problem (the SODDI defense) even though we bought this through Home Depot. We were referred to the pad store, and they concluded that this was indeed a very defective pad.
They want to replace or refund the price, but Home Depot wants us to have the carpet compromised by re-installing. This is not an option, as we paid for new carpet, went through this whole installation before, and do not trust their installation of now-used carpet.
We have been treated very badly for complaining and were finally offered a $500.00 gift certificate from the store, as though we would ever shop there again. We want the carpet and defective pad removed with a full refund, but the store manager will not talk to us. He has refused certified letters, will not return phone calls and will not see us in person, even though we have gone to the store many times. He evidently does not make appointments, either. We need him to climb out from under his desk and talk to us like a business person, or at least an adult, and make arrangements to pick up his inferior products. I have now sent another certified Letter of Demand to arrange a time, but I do not have high expectations of this company or its employees to do the right thing by their customers.
