No Merchandise - Grandmaster Table Tennis Table

Today, my wife and I were shopping in Sears (at Logan Valley Mall in Altoona) for a Ping Pong (Table Tennis) Table. We found just what we wanted on the floor. It was a "Grandmaster Sportcraft" Model and it had a clearance sign on it. We finally got someone to help us and were told that there were none in stock. They said they might not be getting any more in because the company that makes them had filed for bankruptcy. OK we said we would take the one on the floor even though it had some scratches on it. The sales person said he didn't think we could buy the floor model even though it had a clearance sign on it. Sure enough he came back (after taking the clearance sign off the table) and told us that they couldn't sell it to us.
Why not?
This isn't the first time this has happened to us at this store. My wife tried to buy me a meat "smoker" for Christmas. It was on the floor with a sale tag on it. When she inquired about it, she was told that they hadn't had any of those since the summer. Of course she wasn't allowed to buy the floor model of that either. I am starting to think that they don't have anything that's "on sale" or "clearance". It's just on the floor to get you to ask about it and then they try to sell you something else.
This time, I called the store when we got home and talked to a very nice woman who told me that the manager was on the phone and he would call me back. That was yesterday and I never heard back from him. Thanks for your help.
