Dear Target-
I miss you.
I miss your clean, bright stores, your wide aisles and air conditioning.
I miss your Pharmacists with their superfast refills and the friendly clerks, always helpful in finding the odd kitchen gadget. I miss cruising by the five dollar DVDs and stocking up on Burt's Bees, Seventh Generation and super soft Kleenex with aloe and lotion.
I miss you even more now that the holidays are upon us.
I miss you Target but I feel conflicted for missing you.
I feel conflicted because you donated money to a “pro business” candidate ‘who also happened to be’ against the equal rights of non-heterosexuals.
I wonder if you mightn’t have been more careful in your choice of political contributions if the “pro-business” candidate of your choosing was against the marriage and basic human rights of say African Americans, the disabled or Jews?
I understand that the Supreme Court lifted limits on corporate spending and that you can spend your money as you please.
Perhaps that is the difference between us?
I choose not to donate or spend my money in ways which so clearly support discrimination.
You see Target, that is why I made a conscious decision to shop with you and not another
“big box” retailer (who shall go nameless).
I chose to shop with you because I find their business practices, (and they are well practiced aren’t they?) of discriminating against women and minorities to be exploitive and excessively greedy.
In the end, it seems as though we have all lost.
You have lost loyal customers who would come in for a tube of toothpaste and leave a $100 lighter.
We have lost our respect for a retailer we believed to be more than just a “store”.
Everyone has lost it seems, except for the candidate. His ugliness earned him financing and free press.
I was holiday shopping at another store this week, it just wasn’t the same.
I didn’t think I could quit you Target, but it seems I can.
