Terrible Return Policy

I purchased a $14.99 Merona (target label) tshirt and washed it according to the label's instructions (I hadn't even worn it yet). The item bled onto itself and is unwearable. The Target where I purchased the shirt refused to return it because it was washed and therefore considered used. I even had the receipt. I was referred to their 800 customer service number. I spoke to a rep who told me that nothing could be done because he could not see the defective item and it was the store's discretion as to return the item or not. Well, I called the store back, spoke to a "supervisor" and was told that the item was considered used and could not be returned. How is washing an item according to the manufacture's tag my fault? I shop at Target all the time and am so disappointed with a return policy that, in this case, doesn't make sense!
