Cancellation of Sears charge card

I needed to purchase a battery for my Craftsman riding lawn mower. I went to the Sears store in Colonial Heights Virginia ti purchase the correct battery. I select the battery with the help of the associate. I presented my Sears Credit card that I have had since 1982. The associate tried charging the battery but got a code that said the card was invalid. He dialed the office that issued the invalid statement and I talked with a female who informed me that my card had been terminated because of inactivity. I was shocked and embarassed by this arbritary action by Sears. It would seem to me that a business would notify their customers before talking such action. I was told I could re-apply for a card. Great public relations Sears.
