I signed up for DirectTV in October. We upgraded to HD in November. We had 'purchased' our standard receivers and thought we owned them.
The technician told us we own them. (Later DirectTV said he misinformed us and technicians do not have that info... I thought they represented the company?)
I sold the receivers on ebay and then got an email from the buyers saying they tried to activate the receivers but DirectTV said they own them.

After 1 hour on the phone with a rep, I asked to talk to a supervisor. I was told that I would have to wait on hold for about an hour. The rep also told me that she explained the situation to the super and he said, "She can talk to as many supervisors as she wants and she will still have to pay." (If the supervisor had time to talk to the rep. Why not me?) Horrible customer service!
So, I can not talk to a supervisor. I know that I should have read the fine print on the contract... But I think DirectTV takes advantage of their customers trusting nature. I thought a purchase meant we owned the receiver, but NO... A purchase means you are just 'leasing.'

So when I signed up... Why did the rep ask me if I want to lease or purchase the receivers? Why did I 'purchase' them AND pay a monthly fee???

I have even heard that if you buy a receiver from Best Buy that you are still only leasing the equipment.
This is a shady, deceptive business practice. Oh... And when we got our HD receivers in November, they automatically added 2 years to our contract WITHOUT telling us. Horrible... They should be ashamed of themselves. If you work for them... Go find a more reputable company to work for.
