Denied Applicant Told an Account Was Sold to Collector

In March of I applied with Capital One for a credit card and was denied stating they could not verify my information. That was fine, trying to rebuild my credit so a denial is expected sometimes. On 7/06 I received a letter in the mail from MCM (Midland Credit Management) saying they just purchased my Capital One Account with a default balance of 1,330.72. I have never had a account with Capital One. I applied for credit but was denied. So where does this 1,330.72 come from? I contacted Capital One but have yet to receive a response. I will update as information becomes available.
