Donation Fraud ripoff

Miscellaneous

Similar to the two individuals in California:
A young man came to the door (with his adult cousin) explaining that he lived in the neighborhood and was selling magazines so that his baseball team could go to the finals and that his parents couldn't afford to send him, so his coach set up magazine fundraiser to help the players make money.

Then is changes ever so slightly:
He said that this fundraiser was a non-profit event which would earn him points forwards his baseball trip. If I didn't want to select a specific magazine, his mom would select the books or magazines. They would go to underprivileged children in a local hospital, and when the books were read or subscriptions continued, they would be shared with new children in that same hospital. The donation would be a tax write-off, so all three parties would be benefiting.

Similar to the two individuals in California:
He dropped the names of other neighbors who had bought from him and showed me their checks. He mentioned their kids and asked if I knew them.

No matter which subscription I picked, the amount would be $76 for one, $114 for 2 and so on. He said, "my dad said that if people were kind enough to donate to less fortunate children and assist me with my trip, I should do something for them in exchange for them buying magazines. He told me all that he'd made arrangements to wash neighbors cars, mow their lawns, and agreed to edge my lawn (although I thought it wouldn't be necessary).

As you can guess, no cars were washed, no lawns were mowed, and the company is a for PROFIT business which is family run and only open between 10AM-5PM, if you're lucky enough to get through on the phone.

If it is of any benefit, here is a personal description of the two individuals that I encountered:
Young man 1: Caucasian, appox. 21 years old, 5'6-5'8, looked burnt from the beach, brown hair, brown eyes (I think), no facial hair, later claimed to be 24 with a birthday in October.
Young man 2: Caucasian, appox. 29 years old, 5'9-5'11, medium brown hair (wavy, thick), blue deep-set eyes, never said a word, no facial hair.
