Charged $29 Fee for Mailing a Nine Cent Refund Check

I had run out of patience with Citibank because it could not update our address after we moved. On three occasions I filled out the change-of-address card from the post office for our account, with no result. Our bill kept going to the old address and usually arrived on its due date, so I was charged late fees. Formal letters and phone calls got me only the answer that it was my own fault.

Every other company I notified of our new mailing address handled it the first time without trouble. I ended up paying over $80 in late fees. That was enough, so I paid the entire balance, but I wrote the check with a wrong last digit and overpaid by 9 cents. The nine cents meant nothing to me; I only wanted this company out of my life, and I never asked for it back. Citibank sent us a check for .09 anyway. We threw it away, since my bank would not process a check under .50 even if I had tried to cash it.

Rather than a clean notice that my account was closed with a zero balance, I received a bill for $29.00 on my credit card for mailing that check, which I had not asked for. This is absurd. Nobody asks for a .09 check; it is one more sly way to keep my account open and my money in their hands. Citibank can keep the .09, to sit with all the other money it has taken from me. The account is closing now.
