AOL AOL took $104.00 out of my checking account for a DSL modem, that was not authorized by me

Internet & Web

I canceled my membership with AOL in April. On June 1 AOL, which no noitice was given to me, took $104.00 out of my checking account. The reason they took the money out of my checking account was for a DSL MODEM that was not returned. As soon as I discovered this, I returned the modem on June 3.

The first time I called AOL was on June 1st, after I noticed that $100.00 was deducted from my personal checking account. They advised me that as soon as I returned the modem they will credit my personal checking account the $100.00.
I called AOL again on June 10th and they advised me they had no record yet that modem was returned. Then I called back on June 14th and Matt with AOL advised me they would only be able to give me back $50.00 and that $49.00 was a late fee. Therefore, I called AOL again on June 16 at which time Matt, employee #57249, said they cannot return any of my money, but they can reactivate my account and place the credit toward that account. I told Matt that you must think I am really dumb.

Yes I know I should have returned the modem, but I actually thought I purchased the modem in my almost three year membership with AOL, all and all I was a member of AOL since 1998. And at the time of cancelation no one advised me that the modem needed to be returned. The reason I decided to switch to bellsouth is that it was less money.

My reason for this consumer complaints is how can AOL just take money out of my personal checking account without notice, a letter, a phone call or anything. I work hard for a hundred dollars. I returned the modem as requested by AOL and they just ripped me off. If I am not justified please let me know.
