Dell Computer Corporation
6 Months No Interest Ripoff

Internet & Web

In December of we purchased a computer from Dell Computer Corp. I told the sales rep I was interested in the 6 months no interest offer since I was on maternity leave from my company. He explained that a monthly payment was still required, however, no interest would accumulate. I said that was fine.

In Febuary, we received a statement from Dell Financial with $45.00 in interest charges. Naturally, I assumed there was a simple mistake so I phoned them. 6 phone calls and 2 HOURS later, I still had no resolve. I was bounced from customer rude customer service to ruder finance and back again 3 times. 2 hours later, I finally spoke to a rep who informed me that the 6 mos no interest was for "Well Qualified" customers and we didn't qualify? I explained that I was never told we didn't qualify and that I was not going to back down. He offered me a $150 credit to offset the finance charges which I accepted. At the time I was upset, but satisfied.

I then was speaking to my 76 year old Grandfather and mentioned the snafu. (He also bought a computer in Nov) He said the exact same thing happened to him, however, they offered him some crappy software for the inconvenience. I was appalled. We feel we have excellent credit (but realistically, everyone thinks that, right?) but when I found out my grandparents, who have no bills and a lot of money were denied the same financing, I became enraged.

I filed a complaint with the BBB on behalf of myself and my grandfather. Dell responded promptly, assuring me that it is not their practice to deceive. Nina Ayala was the corporate representative who phoned me. She was very sympathetic and said in addition to the credit I received, she wanted to send me a $75 gift certificate. I explained that my grandfather was not offered the previous credit and she said she would contact him.

As of today, I have yet to see my $75 dollar gift certificate AND they notified the BBB that I had been satisfied??? I feel the commissioned based reps at Dell are so eager to sell you a PC, that they are purposely not telling customers that they did not qulify for the finance plan.

This is a total rip-off for they tried to charge me 18% interest. Had I known this, I still would have bought the PC, but I would have used my 7% credit card that also earn sky miles. I also would like to mention that they outsource their financing to Citi Financial and the ever so rude reps I spoke to were not even located in the US. They could've cared less about my situation and were extremely rude and patronizing.
