Vera Williams
UK Car Buying Scam, Check Fraud, Putnam County Federal Credit Union UK, Florida, Arizona

Internet & Web

I have my car posted on AutoTrader.com, after having it posted for a few weeks I received an email inquiry about my car.

The grammar, spelling, etc... Was extremely poor. "I have interest in you mauto." I was suspicious immediately but continued emailing this person, "Vera Williams".

They requested pictures and asking price and claimed that they were from the UK and were working for a client, all shipping would be covered. They asked if a cashiers check was an acceptable form of payment after saying they wanted to buy my car. A while later, they indeed mailed me a check for about 4000 more than the price of my car (for shipping purposes) the money was to be western unioned to a company in the UK.

When I received the check, it was in a handwritten envelope with no return address. The check looked questionable, maybe because I knew things were weird fromt he beginning. I took the check to my bank and told them I believed I had been given a fake check. They looked at it, said it did look bizarre, especially the way it was shipped. They advised me to contact the issuing credit union Putnam County Federal Credit Union. I called them, told them I received a check that was suspicious. They almost immediately knew what was up... Asked me to verify the address on the check:
3506 St. Jones Avenue, Palakita, FL which was incorrect but close. The real address is 3506 St. Johns Avenue
Palatka, Florida

They told me I indeed had a fake check, that they have received several of these and advised me to contact the police.
