Credit Card Fraud Attempt After Signing Up and Account Cancelled

As soon as I registered with PayPal, I received a call from my credit card company that someone was attempting to charge $5000 to my account, along with some other smaller charges. I have shopped on the internet for years and nothing like that has ever happened until I joined PayPal. I had to cancel some transactions that were not mine on the credit card. PayPal was notified and refused my card altogether. Nothing should have been affected by PayPal at all. When I contacted them to straighten things out, they just refused to let me and cancelled all my transactions with them.
Needless to say, I received some angry emails from some merchants from whom I made some legitimate purchases. PayPal just refuses to let me fix my account.
