Competitor Coupon Rejected at West Palm Beach Store Register

I was at Home Depot (West Palm Beach, Florida) today and tried to redeem a competitor's coupon at the register (an associate assured me before stocking materials that it works at HD), but I was told it does not work anymore at Home Depot. I lost 2 hours, and I wonder to whom they are going to sell my stuff (special size carpet, etc.). My advice: do not trust their word, it is nothing.
