ATT Wireless Forced Changing of Rate plan

I've been notified that AT&T is forcing me to upgrade my service. I've been a very very long-term customer. I had AT&T before they sold my contract to Cingular, and maintained that contract even when they bought it back from Cingular. The plan rate I had was National Plan 200 $23.09 and had originally included mmode.

At some point they included a $52/month rate plan fee and upped my additional minutes charges from $0.35 to $0.45/minute, and the monthly rate went from $23.09 to $29.99 as well.

Now I'm being told that as of May 31st, if I do not upgrade my service plan, then I will be terminated.
I called them to ask them what they were offering and was told I could have a free phone (of lesser quality than the one I have, presently), and I wouldn't have to sign a new contract (whoopie!) but the lowest price upgrade would cost me $10 more per month.

This seems to be very bad business, and I can assure you that come May 31 I will no longer be an AT&T wireless customer.
