Excessive Cancellation Fee

Electronics and household app.
I signed up for Direct TV over the telephone. The representative told me only that there would be an early cancellation fee, but not what that would be based upon. I never signed a written contract.
There have been only problems since moving to that service. Here are 4 examples of what happens, 3-4 times each day. "Searching for satellite signal... 277" and that is displayed for 1-2 minutes "We are aware you cannot get this station; there is no need to call us"
While viewing a program, the picture suddenly freezes; nothing happens unless the channel is changed up/down, and then back to the original channel When recording from a TV source, the recording ends at times before the program has ended.
When I called to disconnect the service, I was told the early cancellation fee would be $440. To dispute that, I was told to write a letter to the Greenwood, CO office. Since then, I have found out the CEO's office is in El Segundo CA. No response to my letter for 2 weeks, so I used the complaint online form on DirectTV.com. I have gotten 3 e-mails on this, the latest one today (02/10/09). All messages simply quoted Direct TV's cancellation charge of $440, and the service was disconnected today. I am writing to request, as in my letter, for a 50% reduction due to lousy service, so the disconnect fee would only be $220. My credit card was charged $440 today.
