Bought Receivers at Best Buy, Company Wants Them Back

Directv is a rip off. I bought my own receiver boxes from Best Buy because my TV was struck by lightning and it would take a couple of days for them to send one to me, and they would charge me for that also. I have hi-def TV, and Directv wanted hundreds of dollars to upgrade to hi-def, so I changed to another satellite dish company and got the upgrade for free.
Now, after canceling Directv, they want the receiver boxes I bought sent back to them. They say they own them and I was just renting them, but I bought them at Best Buy and installed them myself, plus I paid 4.99 a month to rent them, so I think I own them. All I need to do is send back the activation card form inside the receiver. Plus they want me to pay an early cancellation fee after 12 years of service with them.
