Refused to replace defective product

I received a CD/DVD set for Christmas — Elton John's "The Red Piano." One of the DVD's is totally blank. The store will not replace the item without the receipt. However, the item is manufactured by Redline Entertainment, which is a subsidiary of Best Buy. So Best Buy is not only the seller, it is also the MAKER of the product. If I made something and it was defective, if it was brought back to me, I would cheerfully replace it as a good business practice.
Actually, I would WANT to know about anything I made that was defective! Apparently, Best Buy does not care. My gift is in its original box, with all the discs and enclosures, and anyone could dunk the defective DVD into a DVD player and readily see that it is completely blank. You can even hold it up to the light, scan across the surface, and see that it does not have the same color tone as a disc that HAS been recorded. At any rate, I suggest that you ALWAYS save Best Buy receipts, and if you get something from that store as a gift, ask the gift giver for the receipt. I am living proof that these people will not replace a defective item, EVEN IF THEIR COMPANY MADE IT.
Lousy business practice, lousy company. Will never buy from them. Ever.
