Return policy on computers

I purchased a computer form the Brookfield, WI. Circuit City and the sales person opened the box while it was still behind the checkout counter. The sales person the retaped the box and gave it to me. I took it home and didn't get it out of my vehicle and my daughter said that it was the wrong model.

I went back to Circuit City and told them that it was the wrong model number and I wanted the right model. They told me that they didn't carry that model, and I told them I would just return it and go to another place and buy it. The price was only a few dollars more for the right one and was only a few miles away.

They told me that they had to deduct 15% because the box was opened and I told them I didn't open it, that the salesperson opened it and resealed it. Rather then argue with them I took the computer and told them that I would never enter any Circuit City again. Is this the policy that prevents returns or did the salesperson not want to lose a sale?
