Bright Image Corporation - TouchnGlow Touch Dimmer Fitting Dangerous, 120v current measured across lamp base. Ripoff

Construction & Repair

After installing a touch dimmer made by Bright Image Corp. Onto a bedside lamp it began turning on spontaneously. Touching the table top or moving nearby would light the lamp. On one occasion the lamp was lit by starting a vacuum cleaner on the opposite side of the room.

Concerned about the strange goings-on we tested the lamp with a multi-test instrument. We found 120v of current present across the body of the solid brass lamp onto which the fixture was installed. We tested the outlet and the lamp without the fixture and found nothing unusual after its removal.

This is potentially a very dangerous situation. Perhaps others might see this and will be careful when using this type of fixture. If it acts strangely it should be removed immediately.

The dimmer is a retrofit type with a screw-in base. After screwing the fixture into the socket a thumb-screw is then tightened onto the outside of the socket to hold it in place.

The fixture label gives the model number S-1, Lampholder fitting number E96955, UL mark, list no. 94M3 followed by www.touchnglow.com. Also listed is wattage and voltage information. The last list item states "Made in China for Bright Image Corporation".
