An Estimate for a Project is not the Charge for the Estimate: $130 ripoff

I was ripped off by Robert Wagner Plumbing and want to make sure that no one else gets taken by these people.

I recently purchased a gas range from Sears and needed to have it connected to the existing gas line. It was a simple hook up and I even purchased the hose to do it. As you may know, a licensed plumber is needed to hook up a gas appliance in MA. We called around for quotes and heard numbers from $150 to $169 (Sears' installer).

When we called Robert Wagner Plumbing (Framingham, MA, 508-879-3242), we told them exactly what we wanted, asked for an estimate, and were told that the estimate would be $130. As the best price, we asked them to come and do the work.

When they arrived, they pulled to classic bait and switch. The $130 was for the estimate to determine what needed to be done and the actual cost was around $330! They even had the costs listed in a PDA. My wife (who was there to have the work done) tried to call me to confirm, had them do the work, since it would have cost the difference to get the work done anyway. When I called afterward to get an explanation of why the work was $330 instead of the quoted $130, I then found out the scam.

In pulling the details from them, I was now able to get their quotes over the phone, too late to make a difference. They insisted that they needed to estimate the job in person to make an accurate quote, but in reality, they only have 3 options listed to do the work, ranging from $278.86 to $438.68. They're clearing ripping off the Metrowest with their deceptive practices.

Don't use these people and tell anyone that needs a plumber that they won't be able to get a quote from these people, but are going to be ripped off because you can't get a cost estimate for the project, but will get a price for them to give an estimate. Any project less than $500 will be a big ripoff and you'll probably donate $150 or more to them over the cost of any other licensed, competent plumber in the state.
