Scammers that charge a huge amount for an estimate

I was in need of quick service. My regular plumber was on vacation. So I called these guys. They tell me that they charge $30 for an estimate and they can fix my problem that same day. I agree to the $30 estimate, even though almost all plumbers/plumbing companies provide free estimates.

So the guy arrives and now claims that the $30 estimate will now cost $150 because he had to cut drywall. I wasn't home to take the 1-2 minutes to cut it for him. But he assured me (over the phone) that for the $150, he will most likely be able to identify and fix my problem. I was hesitant but I agreed. That was a $150 mistake on my part. I should have just eaten the $30 and turned them away.

He cuts the drywall, (about 2 minutes) looks up and says that the repair will cost $850. Huh? No written estimate with a breakdown of parts and labor. Nothing. Just a flat fee of $850. So including the $150 "estimate", this repair would have cost me $1000. And he couldn't do it that day. (Which they claimed they could do)

I sent them on their way. I called another plumber. (Licensed and owns his own plumbing company). He comes over and gives me a free estimate. I have him perform the repair. The cost of the repair? $330. Well for me, it actually cost $480 because I had basically thrown away $150 for my estimate.

Folks, no matter how desperate you area avoid these guys. The big red flag is that they charge for an estimate. Every plumber I have ever used provides free estimates.

I could provide the same service as these guys. I can charge $30-$150 for estimates. I can come over throw out some crazy expensive price. If you don't go with me, I just made $30-$150 for about 5 mins worth of work. If you are crazy enough to go with me, I'll subcontract it out to another plumber. I'll pay the plumber whatever he/she will charge and I will keep the difference which I expect to be huge. What a sweet gig??!!!
