Carmax
Ripoff The salesman misled me and lied and it cost me $3000

Cars & Transport

Good afternoon,

I have already attempted to resolve this problem with Carmax in Merrillville, but the response resulted in no solution although I was contact by the a sales manager from the store and an area manager by the of Paul Washington.

I purchased a vehicle in December as a surprise Christmas gift for my wife. I originally considered a BMW from Carmax but decided that an Expedition would be a better choice. I called my salesperson, Mike Wilson and told him that I had made the decision to look at a new Expedition and he said that he could get me a good deal on a slightly used one. I told him that if he could I would look at it but there were a lot of rebates and discounts on new Expeditions.

Mr. Wilson then contacted me about a 03' with the options I was looking for at another store. I told him that I had a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 45th, loaded that I would like to trade in but I didnt want my wife knowing since it was to be a surprise. I told Mr. Wilson that I would get $15200 for the Jeep trade in on a new Expedition and that I wanted to know about what I could expect from Carmax. Mike said he didn't know exactly but I could go to carmax.com and click on the KBB link to get a close idea. At the time the KBB link showed an estimated trade-in value of $16,000. I realized that the amount listed was simply an estimate but Mr. Wilson assured me that it would be "in the ball-park" as he put it.

In addition, he told me to review the retail value of the a fully loaded Expedition on KBB and reference it to the price of the Expedition he wanted me to purchase from Carmax to get a feel of how closely the prices are reflected. Mike then told me that the Expedition he located was roughly $35,000 and I mentioned that basically a new Expedition was about $3000.00 more than the used one Carmax had and I would get $15,000 trade in. That was again when Mr. Wilson said that I would get about the same for trade in according but save the $3,000 dollars. So I made the deal, planning on getting somewhere close to the $15,000 for my Jeep.

So on 1/16/04 my wife went to Carmax to sell it and she received a quote almost $3,000 less than what I was told to expect. As well as $3,000 less than what I could have gotten trade in on a new Expedition.

Like I said, I have already received two calls from two different people that simply explained the policies. The fact is, I was completely misled. Mr. Wilson told whatever lie he needed to tell to get the sale. It is ironic that the $3,000 less on the quote is nearly the same amount if would have cost me to simply purchase a brand new Expedition with zero miles, not a used on with 19,000 miles. Mr. Wilson blatantly lied and misinformed me to make the sale which cost me $3,000 and a new vehicle instead of a used one and a simple discussion about the policies is not a solution to the problem and loss.

Kindest Regards
