Day 1 (8 PM): Negotiated a price with dealer on a vehicle to be ordered. The bottom line price included a $2500 manufacterer giveback. Placed order and gave deposit.

Day 2 (9 am): Was told the vehicle was unavailable, but that they'd search for another.

Day 3: Dealership found a similar vehicle with additional options, but they wanted more for the options.in the meantime, we discovered that Chevrolet had increased their giveback to consumers for $3500 the day before we signed a purchase agreement on the 1st vehicle.

We negotiated an additional dollar amt for the additional options and requested the additional $1000 giveback since we hadn't taken delivery yet. When we approached the dealership about the additional giveback, they said they hadn't known about it and said they would check into it. They agreed to give us the additional $1000 giveback.

Day 4: When we tried to finalize the deal, they said the original price we negotiated had already included the total $3500 giveback and would not honor the price we negotiated over the phone.

Our mistake: Not requiring them to put the renegotiated price in writing, and allowing them to list the price on the original purchase agreement without spelling out what the actual giveback was (they only listed a bottomline dollar amt).

The result: We ended up paying more for the options, but never got the additional $1000 giveback.
