I rented UHaul 10foot truck from the aforementioned company on June 20st. The bay of the truck had not been cleaned, and had mounds of dirt, sand, mud prints, and debris. I cleaned the truck myself, and returned it in much better condition than I received it.
I drove the truck a total of 6.0 miles, which was confirmed correctly on my electronic statement. I repeat, a total of 6.0 miles. When I received the truck, the fuel gauge was at the halfway mark. A day later, when returning the truck, the fuel guage was just below the halfway mark, but not even at the next fuel tick mark. I put in over 3 gallons of fuel into the tank at a gas station 100 yards from the drop off location. I turned the truck off and on, verifying the fuel gauge was a visible tick mark above the half way mark on the fuel gauge. I drove 100 yards back to the company, parked the truck, locked it, ensured I had left no garbage behind, and turned in the keys at 11:45am in the office drop box. The office would not be open for another 75 mins. I had been using the vehical for less than 20 hours.
My final original bill was supposed to be 22.35, all fees included. My final bill was 65.39, including a 30.00 fine for failing to return the fuel level to the halfway mark, and 7.39 of fuel costs.
I am 100% positive that the fuel tank was above the required half full level when I returned the truck. I am 100% positive that I have been ripped off. I have filed complaints with the UHaul customer service, and I am going back to the office this morning to demand a refund of the 30.00 fine plus fuel they charged me.
I don't know if they drove the truck around to a hill to measure the fuel gauge, if enough of the fuel tank evaporated to make it drop below the half tank (100F temperatures that day), if the service person is incompetent, or if they are intentional committing an act of fraud.
