Bad diagnosis of a problem

My car over heated, they looked at it and told me that that i have an intake manifold leak, need a water pump, all hoses need to be replaced, and possibly head gaskets but they will not know untill they replace the water pump and and fix the manifold gasket which will cost over $2K and if they car needs head gaskets replaced then ti will cost another $2K. I filled up the radiator with water and drove the car to the shop (one minute away), so i knew that it wasn't that bad because the car ran fine) So i was getting ready to sell the car for parts, when i took it to another mechanic who told me that there was no intake manifold leak, and that head gaskets are ok (checked spark plugs and oil for water residue) and all i had to get was a new water pump for $500. I've been driving the car for a couple of months now without problems. These guys are either tryign to rip off customers or their mechanics are useless.
