Citi Financial Auto
Repossession Threat Over $850 After Auto Payment Help Letter

Cars & Transport

Citi Financial Auto Inc. used fraudulent letters to coax consumers who are unfortunate enough to be in the palm of their hands. They have employees waiting for their arrival so they can crush the consumer by threatening them with cruel and heartless harassment.

This is what I recently encountered when I received one of their letters asking if I needed assistance with my auto payment.

My husband has been in and out of the hospital several times in the past year, and we just went through a modification with their sister company, Citi Mortgage Co., where they raised our payments for the next three months due to the lack of insurance confidence backing.

My husband called this company first over the weekend. He spoke with a very nice lady named Jean, who looked at our account and told him that she was sure he could get some help. She gave him a phone number to call and told him to ask for a "Mr. Williams." My husband called this number only to find out that Mr. Williams was not our case manager, and that whoever grabs or is given the case or file is the one who takes care of the account.

My husband then spoke with Hector Mata? (who knows if this is really his name), who asked how he could help. As my husband began to explain our situation, Hector began to scream at him and threaten him over the phone. He told him that if my husband did not have at least half of the payments we owed, he would send someone to repossess our vehicle. As I heard my husband's emotions escalate while talking to this gentleman, I told my husband to give me the phone.

After I took the phone, I asked the person on the other end what the problem was. The gentleman began to talk to me in a rough tone and manner, and I had to tell him I would not be able to talk to him if he did not calm down. He said he would, and then he began by telling me, "I told your husband what I was going to do." I then said, "First, you are not in a position to tell my husband what to do.

Second, we are calling you to find out how we can work this situation out, and you have no right to scream, threaten or talk to us in the manner you are talking to me or my husband right now." He then said, "Ok, I will listen to you." I was then able to explain our situation. After I finished, he started to yell at me again, saying, "I already told you people that if you don't give me the $850.00 right now, I will send my man out to your house right now and you will have to surrender your vehicle."

I continued to try to explain, but he probably did not hear me because he was yelling at me and threatening me at the same time. I told him we did not have that amount of money on hand and that I would have to see if we could make arrangements for that amount to be given to them.

We were under the understanding, from the letter and the other person we spoke with, that they would be able to help us by possibly extending our loan and making our payments lower so we could afford all the payments in the future.

He then screamed that he had nothing more to talk about with me if I did not have any money for him, slammed the phone down and hung up on me.

I wish these companies had not gotten the backing of the government. They don't deserve it, especially if they are going to employ people who treat their customers like this. This is crazy! How much sense does it make that they are backed by taxpayers' dollars so they can turn around and abuse the consumer who needs help? This makes no sense!

This person needs to be fired, and all of the people who treat others like this do not deserve to have a job right now. There are too many people out of work, people who would be willing to talk with others in a nice manner about their situations. Even if the company is not able to help, the least they can do is act nice about it over the phone. This type of behavior is uncalled for and inexcusable!
