Tried to charge $250/hour to replace a water pump on 1999 Minivan

Cars & Transport

He estimated the job to be $300. When I asked him to break down the cost of the part and the amount of labor and the labor rate he mumbled that that is how much it will cost. When I further asked him to break the cost down we then went inside and he punched numbers into his calculator and came up with $245. He still did not disclose the time to do the repair work or his hourly rate which was not posted in his office. I could not see the hourly rate in the shop area but I noticed a sign stating that no non-employees are allowed in the shop area. The bill came out to $218 for the job. It was $49 for the part and $150 for the labor. He did disclose his rate of $75/hour only after I wrote him a check for the repair work.

I arrived at 8:00 and we walked outside to look at my vehicle at 8:30. I told them the water pump was bad and they did an evaluation and determined my problem by 9:00 to be a water pump and then the vehicle went up on the lift. The mechanic worked on removing the water pump and finished by 9:30. The part was delivered at 10:00 and the job was finished by 10:30. This is 1 hour of labor but he charged me for 2 hours. This is dishonest business and I will never go back to this crooked business owner.
