Unknown Card Account on Credit Report Shows $350 Owed

I know one should check credit reports periodically, but I did not until yesterday, when I was trying to negotiate a personal loan.

Much to my surprise, there was a flag on a credit card account that I do not even possess! I have never received a bill from these people, and yet the report says I have an outstanding balance of $350. It also indicates that I am currently $100 past due!

The only other notation is "canceled by credit grantor," whatever that means.

I called Citi-Bank and was given the response "we will check into this." I never heard back from them.

I have tried calling the number above several times and received only hang-ups. Finally I got through and was given another phone number for the Citi-Amaco customer service department (1.800.850.6266).

I finally talked to someone who sounded legitimate. He agreed that my name was not in their system.

He suggested that I write to Citi Corp Credit Service Credit Dept. (PO Box 6003, Hagerstown MD 21747-6003, FAX: 301.714.5958), tell them our story, and ask that this be removed from our credit report.

Does anyone know of any investigation into this company?
