Ripoff

I had to have my car financed with this company because I had just divorced and had no credit. I have paid on it for one year and my balance is higher now than it was when I first started paying on it. I have never been late on a payment but because I changed job's I phoned them to ask if my due date for my payment could change. They were extremely rude and told me "no" and that I would accumulate $4.50 per day in late fee's for everyday that my payment is late. Is this legal? I don't understand how anyone can ever get them paid off.
