Chase Manhattan Bank
Chase MasterCard ripoff on unauthorized payment protection plan

Business & Finance

My mom started being charged for payment protection in which she did not authorize. She called and asked for it to be removed and was told that it would be. I started taking care of the account after she thought this was taken care of but I was unaware that she did not authorize payment protection and that she had called to have it removed.

A couple of months ago I noticed that the charge was getting high for this service because of the higher balance on the credit card. At that time I spoke to my mom about it and she was very upset because it was supposed to be removed way back in 2001. There was also a fraud protection charge that I had noticed and she called to have both of them removed. She had authorized the fraud protection but then decided she didn't want it. To date, both charges are still being added to the bill which has also caused an over limit fee.

I don't understand how a company can get by with charging someone for something that was never authorized, regardless of the circumstances and whether they knew they were being charged or not. It seems to me that if they can't prove that the charge was authorized in the beginning, they should have to credit the card with every dime charged from the beginning plus any over limit fees that were caused by the charge.

I am going to call tomorrow with her and start fighting this out. Who is responsible—the person who didn't notice or the person who charged an account for an unauthorized service? We'll see.
