Fifth Third Bank
Unfair Fees

I was a long time customer of First Charter Bank in North Carolina. We loved them. Their on-line banking was easy to use and always up to the minute accurate. Then they were sold to Fifth Third...& life has never been the same!
I check our account daily. I thought I had a clear understanding of how things were posted. That is what I get for thinking! This week our account was overdrawn. I had a check for $105.00 hit sooner than I thought (the next day after it was written) and I missed making a deposit in time. (One of the things we loved about First Charter was you could make a deposit thru the ATM before 8:00 pm and it would be credited that same day. Fifth Third only gives you credit for the first $100.00)
Anyway, instead of just returning the check for $105.00, it was paid and 3 other "smaller" items were returned which cost me $111.00 in overdraft fees. I called the 800 # on the website and spoke to one rep. Who said there was no way they could refund any of these charges. I asked to speak to a supervisor. I talked w / a very nice lady who agreed to refund $74.00 (2 charges) I said that was very fair since I knew 1 of the charges was ligit! Later that day, I deposited more money to be sure my account was not in danger of being overdrawn again.
Well imagine my surprise when the very next morning I checked my balance and saw that Fifth Third had taken back the $74.00 from the previous day and by doing that my account was short again and this caused 3 more items be returned. *NOTE; these were items that earlier in the week had posted already for payment... Not in the "pending" box... But had actually been paid. VERY CONFUSING!
I again called the 800# and got no where. A cs rep. Refused to help and then the supervisor also refused to give me a reason why they had taken the $74.00 back. They said no charges could be reversed and I should pay closer attention to my account!
I have filed a complaint w / the NC Attorney General's office and the Better Business Bureau. I think Fifth Third should be investigated for unfair banking practices and theft!
