Late Fees - A calculated scam? Or a system that does not work?

I used my US Bank bill paying service to pay a US Bank credit card payment. I indicated the due date as that from my statement. The bill pay cutomer service rep.informs me that the payment was sent electronically on the day BEFORE it was due, so no time lag for mailing. The US Bank credit card division CLAIMS the payment was not recieved until a day AFTER the due date, thus resulting in a late payment fee charge of $39.

No I find this deeply disturbing beacuse it is all US Bank! How can an electronic payment get held up in time for 48 hours? I also checked my US Bank account that the payment was made from, that account shows the payment was debited on the due date, not the day after as the credit card division claims.

I asked for detailed records of these payments from both US Bank's bill pay customer service and US Bank's credit card division. The credit card division's customer service rep. Refused to provide me with the details of my payment, saying they can only tell me the day the payment was posted.

I find it awfully strange that the customer sevice people do not have access to important records so they can answer customer's questions. No one will own up to an error, all US Bank can say is they payment was made on time and the payment was late. Sounds like US Bank has an internal problem they need to deal with or a system that is designed to charge late fees on a radom basis when they have calculated they may be able to get away with it. Has anybody else had this experience?
